What you’ll learn
This short guide covers: unboxing and device check, initializing the device, creating or restoring a recovery phrase, installing Ledger Live, connecting to apps, security best practices, and troubleshooting common issues.
Why it matters
Proper setup prevents loss of funds and protects your private keys. Ledger devices keep private keys offline while allowing safe interaction with online applications.
Before you start
What you need
Read these simple prerequisites: a computer or mobile device, the Ledger device and USB cable, a private quiet space, and your full attention. Do not connect to unknown networks or share your recovery phrase.
Important
Never share your 24-word recovery phrase with anyone. Ledger staff will never ask for it.
Unboxing & device check
Inspect packaging
Check the seal and the holographic stickers. Power on the device and verify the Ledger logo appears. If packaging looks tampered with, contact support and do not use the device.
Tip
Record your device serial number and keep purchase receipts for warranty and authenticity checks.
Initialize & choose a PIN
Create a new device
Follow on-device instructions to choose a secure PIN (6+ digits). Do not reuse obvious PINs. The PIN protects device access if stolen — but it is NOT a recovery method.
Restore option
If you already have a recovery phrase, choose the restore option and enter your words exactly, in the correct order.
Recovery phrase (24 words)
Write it down securely
The device will display 24 words — write them on the provided card. Store copies in secure, separate locations (e.g., safe deposit box). Do not store digitally or photograph it.
Extra protection
Consider metal backup plates for fire/water resistance. Validate your recovery frequently and never disclose it to anyone.
Install Ledger Live
Download and connect
Download Ledger Live from the official site (ledger.com/start). Install the app, connect your device, and follow prompts to add crypto accounts. Only install apps you plan to use.
Security checks
Verify the authentic Ledger Live URL and keep the app up to date.
Security best practices
Everyday habits
Always verify transaction details on the device screen before confirming. Use a dedicated password manager and enable OS-level updates. Treat your recovery phrase like cash — irrecoverable if lost.
Phishing risks
Beware of fake support pages, popups, emails, and social media DM requests for seed phrases or remote access.
Troubleshooting
Common fixes
If the device is unresponsive, try different USB cables and ports. Reboot your computer and retry. If you encounter unknown errors, contact Ledger support via the official site — never give your recovery words.
Recovery help
If your device is lost, obtain a replacement and restore using your 24-word phrase. If the phrase is compromised, move funds to a new wallet immediately.
